KETS 8: Highlights in Review
The level of learning, creativity, and downright fun never fails to increase with each KETS. Keyboard Ensemble and Technology
Seminar 8 of 2009 was testament to this statement!
This past June KETS “went West” and found a new home near Oklahoma City at the University of Central Oklahoma. The gracious piano faculty at UCO were host to seminar attendees including teachers, music educators, worship musicians and Clavinova enthusiasts representing nineteen states.
Clinicians Susan Ogilvy and Susan Cooper gave daily sessions on teaching, recording, arranging and performance applications utilizing the Clavinova. Dellana Cook instructed the group on the Yamaha YPG pianos and PSR portables. Larry Keenan dazzled the participants with performances on the
TYROS 3.
The winning compositions of the first ever Clavinova Composition Challenge were presented in a special session. This was a surprise to three of the seminar attendees who were purposely not told ahead of time that their students were among the winners.
Guest Clinician Phillip Keveren presented a session on using orchestral voices on the Clavinova to teach the “bigger musical picture” and a second session on his piano compositions published by Hal Leonard.
The seminar attendees presented an informal surprise ensemble program for Phillip of his duets and ensembles. He very graciously provided comments after each piece on the aspects that surrounded the composition. The program began with more serious pieces such as his incredible “Toccatanova” and concluded with a fun re-arrangement of his loveable “Party Cat” ensemble that included antics typical of KETS participants.
The week was brought to a close with Project Presentations by the participants and the evening Gala Dinner with graduation awards, great food, fellowship and a final song or two from Larry Keenan on the TYROS. And oh yes, a few jokes and lots of laughter and tears!
Lasting friendships and sharing the love for music with kindred souls remain the hallmark of KETS. As trite as it sounds, we all can’t wait – once again – for next summer!
